Miss World Upside Down

Post by Guest on Sun Dec 13, 2009 3:44 pm

The propriety of beauty pageants may best be explored in terms of the issue of the commodification of women. Radical feminists oppose beauty pageants because they allegedly treat women as commodities and perpetuate their image as sex objects. On the other hand, pragmatic feminists approve of them because their prohibition would deprive many women a means of livelihood, an opportunity for advancement and an avenue of empowerment.

A standard reply to the radical feminist is that the pageant does not project the woman as a sex object to be ogled at by men. Rather, the pageant showcases a liberal feminist conception of woman as a man’s intellectual equal, capable of independent rational thought and moral deliberation.

A cultural feminist offers an additional argument. There is nothing wrong in parading one’s beauty. This is because a cultural feminist does not consider femininity a liability like the radicals do or does not de-emphasize it as the liberals practice. Instead, she uses it as an asset. She is proud to be a woman and is unafraid to express it to the world. To her, vive la difference.

A cultural feminist therefore is proud of her beauty. In fighting for equality, a radical feminist opts to see the less beautiful in man; instead of supposing that man appreciates woman as a thing of beauty or of admiration, she fears that he will debase her so that the pageant degenerates to an occasion for depravity.

The cultural feminist disagrees. To her, a beauty pageant should not be viewed from the perspective of a radical. That makes men to be such low and vulgar creatures; men should be treated with understanding and compassion, as beings capable of refinement and culture. In the event, therefore, that a man looks at a pageant from the more vulgar aspect of his being, he should merit concern or sympathy, not revilement or disgust. He should be taught or encouraged, in other words, to rise above his insensitivity or base-mindedness.

A woman should never consider herself as an object of vulgarity but only as a thing of admiration and of beauty. To her, as for Keats, “A thing of beauty is a joy forever, its loveliness increases, it will never pass into nothingness. . .”

This attitude of the cultural feminist ultimately rests on her view of woman’s nature. To her, a woman enjoys an intimate connection with the rest of humanity which engenders a richer perspective on life. Due to her experience of pregnancy, child-bearing and child-rearing, she possesses a sense of connection and belonging with others that a man is unable to approximate or feel. This leads to a difference in ethical viewpoints. While man values independence, autonomy, truth and justice, woman places greater importance on care, concern, nurturing and compassion.

But in the Miss World Pageant, everything is just turned upside down and only few seem to notice as it is conveniently being protected behind the smokescreen maxim of "beauty with a cause". Thanks Miss Morely for providing us an epic length entertainment decorated with miniscule substance.

Poor Perla, always the bride's maid. Hope she'll be sent to MI for that elusive bride role.
